Welcome to the interactive map that visualizes travel behaviour by voting record in the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
The concept for this project was inspired by the formerly emblematic "Main Street" of a small town; a place where everyone gathered, viewpoints were shared, and communities were built. In our current very much "online" society, we can sometimes (or often!) get caught into echo chambers of our own pre-existing narratives. For myself, I found this to be the case. So I ask: "Where are all the other people that think differently than me? Where are all those people who vote for that other party?". Or in other words:
Where is Main Street?
With that question in mind, I built this map. The map visualizes not the home location of voters, but moreso where they might likely be travelling throughout the region. I combined the Origin Destination Travel information from the Transportation Tomorrow Survey with the Polling booth location data from the 44th Federal Election (results from the 45th election are not currently available at the polling booth level -> Stay tuned for updates!)

The trip distribution can be visualized by total volume (number of average annual daily trips), or by index (the relative distribution of the voting distribution per street segment compared to the regional distribution). The index is useful for showing the relative prevalence of a voting demographic. The volume is useful for showing which segments are busier than others.
Results from the 44th Federal Election were summarized at the polling booth level, taking all polling booth areas which spatially intersect the Greater Golden Horsehoe area. These results are summarized below:
Political Party | Total Votes Cast | Percentage of Votes Cast |
---|---|---|
All Parties | 2,425,838 | 100% |
Conservative | 789,138 | 32.53% |
Green | 64,138 | 2.64% |
Independent | 3,749 | 0.15% |
Liberal | 1,019,383 | 42.02% |
NDP | 428,144 | 17.65% |
PPC | 116,869 | 4.82% |
